If you’ve still got a turkey breast, or two, left over from the holiday dinner here an easy way to share a taste of the holidays with your pups.
Ingredients
Turkey Breast
1/4 cup Pumpkin Puree
1/2 cup Cranberries, pureed
1 teaspoon dried Cinnamon
1 1/2 – 2 cups Water
Directions
1. Combine pumpkin puree, cranberries cinnamon and water in a bowl.
2. Clean the turkey breast and cut into strips, removing all the fat you can from the meat. It is easier to cut if you freeze the turkey slightly.
3. Place turkey strips into the marinade and allow to marinate for at least an hour in the refrigerator.
4. Preheat oven to 180 degrees fahrenheit.
5. Place on a cookie sheet 1/2 inches apart, brush with marinade for additional flavor.
6. Dry in an oven, with the door slightly open to let out moisture, for about 3 to 4 hours, until meat is dry appearance and texture.
Cool and store in an air tight container.

*If you have a food dehydrator that can be used to dry the meat as well, just follow the manufactures instructions.
Make sure to precook the meat, I just boiled mine in the marinade for 3 minutes and then placed it in my dehydrator.

Hi there
So I have a chihuahua that was misdiagnosed as having epilepsy when really what we have discovered is that he has some pretty serious food allergies! So far we have found out that he is allergic to chicken and beef, and he can’t eat fatty fish (salmon) it anything more than a really small quantity or it comes right back up. I have also found that i can’t give him anything “jerky” like because he basically INHALES it and then it all comes back up too (because it hasn’t been chewed). He actually had a salmon skin blockage because of this and he was sick for 4 days until he was finally able to pass it! On that note, I not longer feed him ANYTHING from the pet store and make all of his meals. My husband is jealous. LOL. I would like to get him a treat that he could chew on though to help with his teeth. Have you found any tricks to getting a dog to chew more over inhalation on chewy jerky treats? I have a dehydrator, so I’m totally able to make my own. I’m thinking maybe I should make us some thicker chews so that he is forced to chew longer? Thoughts?
also, you are using RAW turkey breast? How thick do you cut the strips? What is the thickness that you pre-cooked?
Your pup is lucky to have you, husbands can fend for themselves haha! I slice my turkey 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick while it’s raw, making it to thick will lead to a much longer drying times and you run the risk of bacterial growth.
Maybe the yam chews would work? http://doggydessertchef.com/2013/01/10/rosemary-yam-chews/
Those can be made a lot thicker and tend to take dogs longer to finish.
As far as getting him to eat slower, I’m in the same situation as you are. I almost lose a finger when handing out my treats.
I hope this helps. Woof!
I’m confused. I don’t have a dehyradtor. So I cut into strips the turkey breast RAW? Then soak in marinade RAW? for an hour – then in oven for 3-4 hours. At what point to you suggest pre-cooking it? Before putting it in the oven? and in the marinade?
Never done this but my pom is super allergic to wheat, yeast & chicken so Turkey is it and Turkey is super super hard to find in the fur food stores. Would love to make my own Jerky – excited about this recipe.
How long does the Jerky last once it’s done? Do you freeze it? Fridge it?
When dehydrating in the oven I don’t feel that pre-cooking is needed, it a step for the dehydrator because they don’t get hot enough to kill bacteria. I do cut and marinate the turkey raw and if you were interested in pre-cooking any way you would do it before putting it in the oven.
The jerky can last several months in the freezer and if it’s completely dried several months in the refrigerator as well. Since turkey is hard for you to find maybe some beef liver jerky might be an option as well?
I hope this helps. Woof!
