Orrrr add what ever you want. All you need is water and … and any dog safe item or food that you can think of. Treats, toys, chicken, liver … what ever your dog likes. It’s keep them cool and occupied and it’s so much fun to watch them uncover the goodies with each lick.
love this and any idears that makes may pup’s day better
great ideas! Thanks so much!
We boil chicken liver and chicken gizzards…use the broth and one gizzard per ice cube in ice trays …they love this on sunny, hot days! We use the rest as daily treats…we know it is safe!
This looks really good. I will make it with watermelon as one of my border collies is crazy for watermelon.
Just a word of caution of the fruit. Please don’t use grapes as they are toxic to dogs (raisins too). They are a kidney toxin and it doesn’t take many to kill or make your furry friend seriously ill.
I’m just seconding Ann’s comment. Please clarify in the text of this article to not use grapes. We fed grapes to my dog once, and she got violently ill. Thankfully, she lived, but it very well could have killed her. I learned from that experience that it’s best to do extensive research before feeding your dog any “person food.”
How much water do I use
It depends on the size of you pan Sean. If your unsure you can fill the pan half full with water and then blend that amount with the rest of the ingredients.
I have made many of the treats you post and my babies go CRRRRRAZY over them! Of course, I’ve made some adjustments to some and they could barely wait until they got cooled down. I’ve got one in particular that they just LOVE <3
I use:
4 cups oatmeal
2 extra large eggs
1/2 cup pumpkin
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce, 1/2 apple butter or strawberry jam{All homemade :) }
3 very heaped TBS peanut butter
2-3 TBS parsley
In a large bowl, combine all ingredients, and if too moist to handle, {Sticking to your hands.} add another 1/2 cup oats, or enough that you can roll {Depending on size of your baby/ies} into balls. I personally use 2 TBS for my Black Lab, Max and 1 TBS for my tiny Nibblet. {Hence the name.} Once you have a ball, flatten it to 1/4 – 1/2 inch thickness {Or you can keep them as balls.} Bake in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes, turn them over and bake an extra 5. Turn oven off and open door slightly and keep cookies in it until oven cools. {My oven door won't stay open at the slightest anything, so I use a chopstick to keep it open and if you don't have that, use a wooden spoon handle. The "slightest" I can keep it open without either of those is 6-7 inches. You don't want it open that much. What you are doing, is drying the cookies out more, so there is a crunchiness to them. Thanks for all of the great ideas and recipes, Doggy Dessert Chef! I'll be looking for more :)
That sounds yummy Sharon, no wonder they go nuts!
Sharon, when you say oatmeal is that 4 cups of cooked oats or 4 cups of dry oats? Are they rolled oats or quick oats? And if they are dry do you blend them into a powder before making it? The recipe sounds amazing. Thanks.
We featured this recipe in our latest blog post ” Fun ways to TREAT your dog this summer”. Our dogs loved the recipe, thank you :)
Thank you so much Nicole, I’m so glad your pups like it!
Gail, I’m sorry for answering back so late, but the oats I use to make my doggies treats are uncooked and rolled. I keep them as they are. I’ve tried the quick oats and they sucked up everything and made a mess. The rolled oats are my choice for making most treats for my babies. And after all this time, they STILL love them! :)
