be ready to bite when you need to

stuff this dog taught me

Due to a job transfer I found myself moving out of state, so I loaded the Kiddo and Big B in a U-Haul and hit the road.

Between the dog, the four year old (okay, and me) I think we stopped at every rest stop that we passed so we developed a system. Me and the Kiddo would jump out of the truck, leave the window cracked and dash to the restroom (no accidents on this trip!) We would then return to the truck and let B out to pee and stretch his legs while the Kiddo ran around near by.

We were walking back to the truck when I noticed a man standing in the grass. As we approached he gave me a little wave and asked if I was traveling alone. When I didn’t answer he took a side step towards the truck and told me that it wasn’t safe for a woman to be traveling alone, bad things could happen. He then gave me the creepiest grin and took another step, which placed him between me and the trucks door.

It was then I noticed that other then a couple of 18-wheeler trucks on the other side of the parking lot there was no one else around and if I was to scream it was a good bet that they wouldn’t hear me. I reached down to pick up the Kiddo when something slammed into the door behind him, causing us both to jump.

It was B, and he was barking so hard there was spit flying from his jaws. As he barked he clawed at the window and begin to slowly pull it down. The man stood there, staring at the window, until B had it down far enough for him to get his head and a paw out and he begin clawing at the man.

With that the guy took off.

Up until that point I had never seen B do anything more than nap, eat (a lot) and bark at squirrels. Now I had no doubt that he would have done what ever he needed to do to keep us safe.

We jumped into the U-Haul and got the heck out of there. Our next stop? The drive-thru, if anyone deserved a burger it was this dog.

  1. Good B!! He deserved whatever he wanted after that :)) My white shepherd was protective over my family like that. It was a very comforting feeling. Glad you have B and glad you made it through the trip safely!

  2. What an amazingly good dog. I learned early on to pay attention when my dog puts on his Deep Big Dog bark because he picks up on so much more than we humans do!
